Practices 4/25 - 5/23

April 25 2009 - 14 Miles Run @ Appian Way, LBC

I was out of town this weekend in Las Vegas… Vegas Baby Vegas!!! However, I still did my run on Thursday 4/23. I ran around my home in Manhattan Beach. I woke up a little late so I didn’t get to run all 14 miles (I got in about 10 miles). It was a recovery run so running 10 miles felt easy. I was in Vegas for a volleyball tournament that our team took 2nd place in :).

May 2 2009 - 20 Miles @ Bolsa Chica, Sunset Beach

This run was nerve racking. The 18 mile run was hard for me (and James’s name is really Ian… not sure why I thought his name was James). There were 5 of us in my running group that showed up today. We ran from Sunset Beach -> Huntington Beach -> Newport Beach and back. This run I felt was easier than the 18 mile run. It could have been because there were more people talking, I had mentally prepared for the long run better, and/or I had a recovery week right before to help refresh my legs… whatever the reason it was nice to complete this run. We all went into the ocean after, some even swam. It makes a difference when you cool your legs off after. The only thing about this run was once I was finished I thought, “I still have a least another hour of running when it comes to race day… Holy Hell.” I know it will end up being mind over matter come race day.

May 9 2009 - 16 Miles @ Bolsa Chica, Sunset Beach

Today marks the “back off” till race day. 16 miles didn’t feel too bad. Linda and I finished in just over 2hrs 30 min (under a 10 minute mile pace). I felt good after this run.

May 16 2009 - 12 Miles Run @ Appian Way, LBC

I was out of town again for this run, in SF for Bay to Breakers! I ran 12 miles on Thursday 5/14 in Santa Monica. It was a nice run… 12 miles has never seemed so easy. I can’t believe I am running 12 miles and thinking it is a light day, wow!

May 17 2009 – 12K Run @ Bay to Breakers, SF

I ran in B2B. This is almost unheard of since most people drink and stumble through the race. My race bib was 35606. You can look up my pictures (http://www.sportphoto.com/Event.aspx?EventID=70) and finishing (http://www.ingbaytobreakers.com/ or http://b2b2009.bazumedia.com/event/B2B2009). I had a blast and did better than I thought I was going to do. I ran into my old roommate Emily Hansen while running right before they take action photos so we are running in the pictures together. The part I found hard was running/ weaving through the crowd. There were so many people and I started in the last corral (late sign-up). It was a good experience I thought for getting ready for my marathon race day. I also may have slightly bruised the top of my foot while running but it has healed now and should be good to go by 5/31.

May 23 2009 - 8 Miles Run @ Appian Way, LBC

Last team run before my marathon!!! It was a costume run so I dressed up in 80s attire (leopard spandex pants and all). The run was easy and was followed up a few hours later with a BBQ. Overall, I am very happy with TNT and would recommend them to anyone who wants to run in their first marathon. Wish me luck this Sunday for my 26.2 mile run throughout San Diego! Thanks you all for your support.

Practice Updates 4/22/2009

Hi... so I have missed a few practice up-dates, I am sorry. I will try to re-cap in this blog. All Saturday practices up until March went smooth. I felt good after each run and was excited for training.

March 7th 2009 - 8 Miles Run @ Appian Way, LBC

The day was beautiful. The run takes you from Naples through Belmont Shores on the running/ bike path. Today was the first day I felt a hip problem. It started around mile 6.5. I ran through the pain but on a scale of 1 - 10 it was a 7. I could not have run much farther on the pain. I went home that week and googled what could be potential problems. The most common causes were either, wrong shoes, weak back, tight Hamstrings, or too long of stride. I had just gotten new shoes 2 weeks before so I hoped it was not the cause.

March 13 2009 - 10 Miles @ Russian Hill, SF

I was in SF for my Alumni weekend. Alyssa Jones and I started a run from mission hill towards the Golden Gate Bridge. Alyssa made it about 6 miles... great job. I continued to run and ran across the bridge and back. At mile 8 I started to get my hip pain and had to walk. I walked most of the last 2 miles. This made me really worried. I had started to stretch more and do back strengthen exercises. I was still hoping my shoes we not to blame. The rest of the weekend went well in SF... I won a signed Gasol jersey at a silent auction for $140. Go Lakers!!!

March 21 2009 - 12 Miles @ Palos Verdes, LA

I stayed at Jamie Czesak's mom's house in PV. We had a great little BBQ and swim. The dance party was even fun. I woke up to meet my team and the southbay team at 7:15AM. I focused on not taking large strides in my walking intervals. This seemed to work. I finished the run with little hip pain!!! I can keep my shoes, yeah! The run was beautiful but a little hilly compared to everything else we had run so far. After there was a potluck but I had to bounce because I was playing in a rev-coed tournament in LA I had to get to. I did snag a power bar that was amazing, I haven't been able to find where they sell it but it was citrus flavored.

March 28 2009 - 90 minutes @ El Dorado Park, LBC

This was a fun easy run on or recovery week. It was only about a 9 mile run. I had no hip pain!!! I received a t-shirt for raising $1500 that I gave to Scott because it was too large for me. After the run I played in a grass tournament with Jamie Czesak that we won. It was a beautiful day.

* Story: Scott was running with the shirt I gave to him in north county SD. Several people that crossed his path yelled, "GO TEAM!" Scott yelled back, "yeah... go running." He was thinking people must be really excited to run here in North county. After the 4th "Go Team" he realized it was his Team in Training shirt he was wearing. If you run with team in training you yell "Go Team" to other team in training people... helps motivate.

April 4 2009 - 14 Miles @ Appian Way

This run was good. It was Linda, Rahul and I. We ran from Naples, through the peninsula, to the end of the bike path, and back. I did well till the last mile. Linda was talking and when she talks while running her pace speeds up to a sprint (at least it felt like it). I fell a few steps behind but I still did well. I didn't want to push too hard because I wanted to keep make sure my hip didn't start hurting. After the run I became a little stiff in my legs and a girl asked me if I was alright. Hahaha... I just ran 14 miles for fun, no I am not alright.

April 11 2009 - 16 Miles @ Bolsa Chica

This run was amazing. We ran at a little faster of a pace because the 2 guys that run in our group made it today and the sped up the pace. We ran from Seal Beach to Brookhurst St and back. It was a beautiful day but started to get a little warm at the end of the run. We finished in a little over 2.5 hrs. Go Team!

April 18th 2009 - 18 Miles @ Bolsa Chica

This run was the hardest for me so far. There were only 2 of us running, myself and another guy, James. It took us 3 hours, which is a fairly good time. At mile 15 I was hitting my mental wall. I wanted to stop and I was questioning why I wanted to do this. James kept me positive and talked about nothing for the last 3 miles to keep my mind off running. We got back we stretched and jumped in the ocean... it was amazing. I can tell now 26.2 miles will be all a mental game... mind over matter. I will be the little engine who could.

Practice 2 and 3

I would first like to thank all of you who have made a donation, you rock!

My second practice I missed because of work. I was stuck in Indiana on a military base. I was working long hours which made it really difficult to find time to run. It was also 20 degree and I was not acclimated to running at that temperature. It didn't snow while I was there so I have no fun running in the snow story, sorry.

My third practice was on Saturday (2/21). It was a beautiful morning and the team was meeting behind the Jack in the Box on PCH at Warner. Linda and Derek pick me up around 6:30AM from Alyssa's house (she lives in Long Beach). We made it in time to hear the morning announcements. We decided to run in the top group. They now split our team into 5 groups. There were only 4 runners in our group and an instructor. We ran for an hour and went a little over 6 miles. On our way back you could see the Jack in the box sign... I never felt happier to see a Jack in the box in my life.

I received a band to wear while I run with the names of loved ones who have lived or died from blood cancer. If you would like, I would be honored to wear any of your loved ones names. Please send them to me so that I can add them to my band. Thank you for your support.

First Practice

I had my first Team in Training practice today at 7AM in Long Beach. It was a little harder then I though my first practice would be, only because it rained the whole time. Besides the weather, practice went great. We only had to run for 40 minutes which doesn't seem too bad right now, even in rain.
There were about 30 of us out there today, some walkers, and some joggers. I met a bunch of new friends. My mentor, Erin, is awesome. She is a blood cancer survivor. This will be her second marathon. Everyone seemed extremely happy for being awake at 7AM on a Saturday standing in the rain. I even had a smile on my face... I am ready to take this Marathon head on.
I will not be able to make it to next weeks practice because I will be in Indiana for work. Linda will be there to tell me all about what happens. I will run while in Indiana in the snow next week so look for that blog update... I might not sound so excited then.
Have a great weekend!
